The Old Guy … The Russell County Stamp Series …

December marked the last month of the Russell County Stamp Series. Each month of the year, a US postage stamp was created from an original photograph of my own. The photographs didn’t necessarily follow a pre-determined monthly theme except for maybe the influence of the four seasons. The only real standard I adhered to was every photograph had to be taken in Russell County.

A monthly mailing included an addressed envelope with a slip of paper denoting the stamp number such as 1 of 12 along with a stamp title. Also stuffed within the confines of the envelope was a personal non-form letter type of message tailored for the individual receiving the mailing. Everything except the stamp was hand lettered with my fountain pen.

Twenty stamps came on a sheet and the mailing list was comprised of eighteen people. Fifteen of the stamps when to Russell County addresses, one went international and two were sent out of state.

I mailed the envelopes at the start of the second week of every month. Fortunately, I never missed a scheduled mailing but there were bumps along the path. One sheet of stamps spent a week in California then flew to New Jersey where in two weeks the stamps went to three different post offices in that state before arriving in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mail in my part of Kentucky goes to Knoxville before finding its way back to Kentucky.

One sheet of stamps entered a black hole in Oakland, California and I actually received a reorder of the stamp before the originals finally showed up. Despite more than several instances of this order, two hundred-sixteen stamped envelopes in all were sent during the course of the year.

Would I do another Stamp series in the near future … probably not. The series gave me a goal and purpose during a year where I felt rudderless. I needed to gain once again a small measure of artistic discipline. I might do a special series sheet every once in a while, but won’t be held to account for that thought.
