The Old Guy … When The House Is Silent …

Silence … Not Necessarily Golden

Yes, a predator and prankster lurks in the darkness …

Soft kitty,
Warm kitty,
Little ball of fur,
Happy kitty,
Sleepy kitty,
Purr Purr Purr.***
(yeah that’s about right)

I heard noises. Unfamiliar noises. Before I could get straightened up from my chair, Kat had appeared in the living room doorway. The maneuver had become her trademark. Any strange noise, things crashing to the floor or anything loudly out of place especially silence … there she’ll be innocently sitting in the doorway looking up at me. This instance I found a raw hamburger wrapper in the center of the kitchen floor. Either I dropped it or she had gotten it out of the garbage. Maybe I dropped it. After all, the garbage can rests inconspicuously on top of a step stool … and Kat is only four going on five months old. Yeah … that could be it.

I am beginning to learn the true meaning of “Underestimation”. The second time I heard noises, I found the raw hamburger wrapper once again on the floor with a lot of finite feline looking teeth punctures all over it. Kat had somehow gotten into the garbage can. I don’t know how she got up there but having been down a similar disciplinary road before …  and dealing with a critter that as of yet has no concept what-so-ever of “NO” … I put the trash can temporarily into the back bedroom and closed the door. It stayed there for the best part of two days.

So … the kitchen chairs are back in place and the trash can has been returned to the step stool. Kat plays a lot in the kitchen. Maybe it’s the carpetless floor, or the availability of the refrigerator and stove, but she loves the kitchen. She also has a cotton grocery bag that she plays with and naps inside, kinda back to normal … except when I came home yesterday she had tried to get on top of the microwave. I know this because my coveted oatmeal bowl and another one less thought of were on the floor along with four potholders and several bags of tea. That’s another instance to think about since the microwave is not being exiled to the back bedroom. To be continued …

*** The song is originally called “Warm Kitty“, and parts of its lyrics sequence have been altered for the version sung in The Big Bang Theory.  According to claims in a copyright lawsuit, the words to “Warm Kitty” were written by Edith Newlin.[2][3][4] The original version is a very popular Polish traditional lullaby “Wlazł kotek na płotek“, a folk tune from the 18th century.

I was told by my grandfather that if you are destined to hang you'll never drown. I have never been afraid of water . . .

    • There is no underestimation here Ms Danica. I am learning quickly and enjoying the snuggle moments when she falls asleep on my chest while I type on the keyboard resting on my knees. It’s when the house grows still that I have to get up slowly to investigate only to find her sitting or lying in the doorway. Her hearing seems to be quite acute. I cannot sneak up on her. g

  2. Kittens are full of mischief, but how can you be angry when they are so darn cute.

    • Ms Sheila … I am getting a crash course education in cute and snuggles as well as super sharp claws and blinding speed. This is all new since she is the first of her kind to be here with me. Thanks for you kind and generous comment. g

  3. Because of our mischievous fifteen-year-old cat and our year -old dog, ALL trash cans are under the sinks behind the cabinet door in every room.

    • The trash can rests on the step stool because of the little Yorkie I had years ago, Ms Saundra. But for Kat nothing is put up too high and hidden behind closed doors is awkward. I have to find a happy inbetween. g

  4. LOL – Kat is so much like my grandkitty! She’s adorable, inquisitive, and into everything! PS – I love Big Bang Theory, too! Enjoy your weekend!

    • Today Ms Shelley, Kat got a brand new brown paper bag all of her own. You would have thought I bought a teenager a new car. She is of great comfort to me and a cuddle buddy though we have bumped heads over the big plant, begging for tuna and her wanting to go into the basement. This morning she knocked over the trash, and dashed into the basement despite my best efforts to keep her out. We are working on these issues. Thanks for your comment. g
