The Old Guy … Sailor Man …

Sailor Man

I was once a sailor man,

Young and proud.

With no fear of a restless sea,

On many a menacing day or night,

Steadfastly turned to face an ominous wind.

High seas,

Pitch and roll,

Relentless and unforgiving.

Life and death below,

Forever dark and deep,

Waiting and hauntingly vigilant.

War and peril,

Were shadows that threatened,

From a distant horizon.

Oh restless waves I prayed,

Have mercy on the young and proud.

I was once a sailor man so many years ago,

Filled with youth, spirit and fire.

And on a lonely sea,

Deep into an endless night,

Too much time to think of what could be.

I was told by my grandfather that if you are destined to hang you'll never drown. I have never been afraid of water . . .

  1. This brought tears to my eyes. it reminds me of my dad who was a career Merchant Marine and sailed the seven seas his whole life. Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year.

    • We are all fortunate the Merchant Marine service is so dedicated to the service of our country. Thanks for your generous comment. g

      • Thank you. My daddy loved the sea, as do I. the sea was his life. He fought in the Australian army in WWII (he was from Melbourne), then was in the Merchant Marines for both the Korean War and Vietnam, then continued with the Merchant marines for the rest of his career.

    • Ms inese … I am warm, safe and feeling fairly well. The cats keep me honest and somewhat busy at times. This next year is a question mark. If the doctors can’t get my vision fixed my photography is over. It would be a large slice of myself gone. I think in the last two months I haven’t taken a dozen new photographs. Can’t focus much less read or work up the photographs. We’ll see. Right now the desire to take pictures is waning.Thank you for the kind words about the poetry. I do like to write. g

      • John – don’t worry much about photography. If you feel that you have difficulty to produce a sharp picture, I promise you that your writings are still ‘sharp’, heartfelt and wonderful. Wishing you a healthy and happy 2019!
