The Old Guy … Armchair Dinner #3 …

The Armchair Dinner tonight is Chinese Noodles with Green Peas, fresh chopped Sweet Onion and Genuine Imitation Crab Meat cooked in real Butter. This was very good but hard to get everything to stay hot at the same time before being combined. This is a keeper recipe.

The Old Guy … Excerpt: Journal Entry #4 …

Excerpt – Journal Entry May 30 2019: Tree Rats Again
***
I swear I am going to buy a gun. These Tree Rats are driving me to despair, grief, frustration and anger. These crawling, walking, running and climbing creatures are robbing my bird feeders. I’ve hollered at them in a hostile and hateful voice, but they pay hardly no mind. They leave for a short moment, and then slink back as if they are invisible. I’ve thrown my cane at them. I’ve thrown gardening implements at them, and even thrown broken tree limbs at them.

I am at the end of my tether with these critters. Time to start thinking about obtaining a gun. I haven’t owned a gun in nearly forty years but I remember them and how they operate. The only thing I have now at the house is my Acme Manual Home Self Defense Kit #17 which is a machete with a genuine imitation black plastic grip and genuine imitation black cotton fabric like sheath with belt loop included. I also have a switchblade knife that I use as a letter opener. It has genuine imitation black plastic grips, but I would accomplish little hobbling around in the yard with my cane and deadly blade. Those little horrors are much too fast for me.

The Old Guy … Armchair Dinner #2 …

The Armchair Dinner tonight is a Homemade, carefully crafted, Meatloaf with Petite Red Potatoes and Home Canned Brown Stick Beans.
***
Into the ground beef I mixed Seasoned Tomato Sauce, Red, Green, Yellow, and Orange diced Bell Peppers. In addition, I added diced fresh Onion, Bread Crumbs and two eggs.

The Brown Stick Beans … were cooked very slowly with a large nice Ham Bone and Petite Red Potatoes. When plated, fresh diced Sweet Onion was spread over the Green Beans and Potatoes. All in all a pretty good Armchair Dinner.

The Old Guy … Excerpt: Journal Entry #3 …

Excerpt – Journal Entry June 2 2019: A year or so ago, the county went from a long standing dry county to a wet county. Now alcohol sales are legal.

****

The other day I went to the drug store looking for a specialty battery for an old camera. When I turned to go down an aisle I was thunderstruck. Both sides of the aisle were covered from top to bottom with wine and liquor bottles. I haven’t witnessed such a sight in over thirty years. And the prices … they probably exhibited the time and inflationary rise in greenbacks needed for a purchase since I last partook … many, many years ago. I have long been a temperance man, and seldom thought of a long past luxurious clear liquid chilled by a generous application of crushed ice and …

I walked slowly down the aisle, stopping occasionally when I recognized and old friend or former nightly companion. In my younger years, I was an in excess drinker, a rake and a scoundrel. At the end of the aisle, I turned slowly and stood there for a moment. I hadn’t see the old love of my life on the shelves. Could that have been a wanton mistake of the store ownership, or an oversight due to my incompetence; my overwhelming fear of confrontation?

My pace returning down the long aisle was more deliberate. Halfway down the crowded shelves I stopped. There to my left … on the top … my old green mistress beckoned me softly. In her front, at the delicate neck line, the distinctive red seal. I touched her side and shivered, withdrawing my hand from the flames. Her imported body seductively called my name with promises of what could be. My mind raced madly and my hands trembled. Why is my face … making that expression … making that face … a face of want combined with obtaining a forbidden desire? I stood there for a heartbeat confused and fighting the urge to do something reckless.

Quickly, I switched into dine-and-dash speed and with the help of my sturdy genuine aluminum cane escaped from the store and most of my past demons. I decided this day, not to throw caution to the wind, but behind me … I could hear soft seductive laughter.

I will stay a temperance man despite the pull of memories that upon recollection seem get to a certain point and then turn black. There are no recognizable endings to many of my memories. They all stop short. Strange, but probably explainable. The pull of my old green mistress remains great and I often feel the weight of her heavy hand. Now, I know where my temptation resides. It all makes you think, forty years since my last drink, and her soft voice still can be heard echoing in my head and heart; her laughter haunting me. I imagine I am not the only one …

The Old Guy … Excerpt: Journal Entry #2 …

Excerpt – Journal Entry May 27 2019: Memorial Day Morning
Breakfast time. Two sausage patties and a half cup of oatmeal heavily seasoned with Cinnamon Sugar, butter and pink packaged artificial sweetener to hide the taste of the oatmeal. Normally, it was good.

But on this holiday, I had given consideration to using a new product on/in my oatmeal. Recently, I picked up a tub of Cinnamon Sugar flavored soft butter. Now this product was looked upon with great anticipation. I love Cinnamon in and on all types of food especially oven/toaster-oven toast. There was a heightened sense of joy and self-congratulation with my purchase. My smile instinctively seemed infectious. I was sure even the cats were smiling … at least inwardly according to their nature. That is … until I opened the package.

The silence of the kitchen was overwhelming. It was a strange dark orange or more descriptively, the butter was a dark pumpkin orange. But butter was yellow, is yellow … butter was always one of the many shades of yellow. I thought it was spoiled, but it somewhat grudgingly passed the taste test. By appearances, it was a disaster and quite understandably contrary to the laws of nature. There was no way, even on a bet, that I would put that mess on my oatmeal.
