The Old Guy … Did I Do That? … Oh Noooooooo …

Oh Nooooooooo … .

Yes … she is cute, cuddly and supposedly innocent lying in my chair on my soft sittin’ pillow …. Mysteriously curious during photo shoots, or at rest … she misses nothing. But … a coiled tiger of energy rests inside … that can be awake and functioning within a single breath.

I was getting ready for church when Kat, fresh from a cat nap,  jumped up on the table, got tangled in my camera strap and pulled the steadfast photographic instrument off the wooden surface and onto the floor. Alas, the Nikon 18-105 mm VR lens was broken beyond repair (body damage), and the double battery grip/pack an unfortunate recipient of the same fate. A quick damage tally came to $400.00 USD or more. An expensive lesson learned about what you put on table tops.

The Old Guy … Crafty-Curious-Able To Leap …

Crafty & Curious-And … .

I was caught off guard when Kat came to live with me. I greatly underestimated her. And even greatly doesn’t describe the length and depth of my ineptness. I was under the impression and thought she was a sweet little soft kitty that loved naps, playing with stuffed mice and looking outside at the birds from the back of the couch. Along with my scratched up legs, arms and hands … I am learning.

Twice I caught her up on the stove or at the kitchen sink and countertop. Scolding her didn’t seem to make an impression. I was lost to find a solution. Then one afternoon, she must have forgotten I was sitting at the kitchen table working on the computer. She jumped into the other kitchen chair, then jumped onto the small food preparation ledge in front of the microwave and was almost ready to jump onto the stove when I hollered at her. It’s not practical to move the microwave because I needed the ledge to stir food and the likes when cooking. Moving the chair into the back bedroom wasn’t a solution because I needed it for food prep. So, after thinking it over, the temporary fix was to block the ledge with a pizza box and a moist wipe container. I also  keep the chairs pushed up to the table when not in use. So far this temp fix has stopped further feline exploration of the sink, counter and stove top. It has not stopped the demand for explanations.

The Old Guy … No Handbook Included …

I would Have Read The Handbook If …

Soft, cute, cuddly … and entertaining, Cats do make exceptional pets … so I am told. I suppose once Kat trains me to an acceptable level of competence, I will most likely agree with that unknown, but knowledgeable person. Unlike most things that come to the house, this small creature didn’t come with an instruction manual or handbook. A Google search produced confusing results; by the hundreds of thousands.

Despite their best efforts to look innocent and docile, don’t be lulled into a sense of complacency or false sense of security. A dynamo of huge proportions can be released with their next breath. A bundle of high energy and, I have been found old, slow and easy to manipulate. No wonder I haven’t a chance.

This is Kat’s “Beware … something is in the wind look”. It is probably explained in detail in a chapter of the “So You Got Yourself A Cat” handbook. Yeah again, that would be the manual I didn’t get. But then, maybe Kat got me for an early Christmas present and she is working out the kinks in me ….

In quieter times, I haven’t been successful in teaching Kat how to sit up for a treat … She has gotten close but just isn’t there. I was told cats don’t do dog tricks. Maybe so, but that doesn’t keep me from trying to make treat time special even if she hooks one of those sharp little claws in me.

The Old Guy … When The House Is Silent …

Silence … Not Necessarily Golden

Yes, a predator and prankster lurks in the darkness …

Soft kitty,
Warm kitty,
Little ball of fur,
Happy kitty,
Sleepy kitty,
Purr Purr Purr.***
(yeah that’s about right)

I heard noises. Unfamiliar noises. Before I could get straightened up from my chair, Kat had appeared in the living room doorway. The maneuver had become her trademark. Any strange noise, things crashing to the floor or anything loudly out of place especially silence … there she’ll be innocently sitting in the doorway looking up at me. This instance I found a raw hamburger wrapper in the center of the kitchen floor. Either I dropped it or she had gotten it out of the garbage. Maybe I dropped it. After all, the garbage can rests inconspicuously on top of a step stool … and Kat is only four going on five months old. Yeah … that could be it.

I am beginning to learn the true meaning of “Underestimation”. The second time I heard noises, I found the raw hamburger wrapper once again on the floor with a lot of finite feline looking teeth punctures all over it. Kat had somehow gotten into the garbage can. I don’t know how she got up there but having been down a similar disciplinary road before …  and dealing with a critter that as of yet has no concept what-so-ever of “NO” … I put the trash can temporarily into the back bedroom and closed the door. It stayed there for the best part of two days.

So … the kitchen chairs are back in place and the trash can has been returned to the step stool. Kat plays a lot in the kitchen. Maybe it’s the carpetless floor, or the availability of the refrigerator and stove, but she loves the kitchen. She also has a cotton grocery bag that she plays with and naps inside, kinda back to normal … except when I came home yesterday she had tried to get on top of the microwave. I know this because my coveted oatmeal bowl and another one less thought of were on the floor along with four potholders and several bags of tea. That’s another instance to think about since the microwave is not being exiled to the back bedroom. To be continued …

*** The song is originally called “Warm Kitty“, and parts of its lyrics sequence have been altered for the version sung in The Big Bang Theory.  According to claims in a copyright lawsuit, the words to “Warm Kitty” were written by Edith Newlin.[2][3][4] The original version is a very popular Polish traditional lullaby “Wlazł kotek na płotek“, a folk tune from the 18th century.
